Poem for Valentine's Day

There are no eternally bonnie lasses or blissful wistful ever afters

There is only checking the locks at night

And who will be the first to say “I’m sorry”

Our mothers did us a huge disservice with Cinderella and Snow White

The words ‘prince’ and ‘charming’ should never be used in the same sentence.

Others will always be prettier than you

No matter how you love and give and nurture, he will not

He will use your body over and over again, but will never honor it simply because it is a part of you

A woman will freely give to her lover; a man will be a lover freely

Then on Valentine’s Day he will buy a trinket or a small token and it,
he assumes,
will be enough.
