God Bless the Hell Out of You: A Poem for Ardie

Met him at the coffee shop.
Could have sworn he was a Jew by his nose.
But he was Catholic.

Talked about his new book-
Out by year's end.
About his life as a hospice worker
And part-time insurance salesman.

On his way to St. John's to donate food to the needy,
Rather than meeting his girlfriend at the Sheraton.
That's what he used to do.

Married for 25 years to the same woman,
And pissed off at the Establishment.

"You're going to have to take the profanity out of your book
In order for it to meet the standards of the religious genre."
That's what the publisher told him.

"Bullshit," he said.
"You can't tell real stories of redemption without talking about real life."

So they published it.

"Something has shifted so profoundly in our society that the idealized, pop culture image of women in today’s pornified world is no longer a Stepford Wife but rather a plasticized, scripted, hyper-sexualized, surgically enhanced young woman. The media world we live in today has replaced the stereotyped Stepford Wife with the equally limiting and controlling stereotype of a Stepford Slut."

“They may seek to spark conflict between different faiths, but as Americans we are not — and never will be — at war with Islam,” Mr. Obama said. “It was not a religion that attacked us that September day; it was Al Qaeda, a sorry band of men which perverts religion. And just as we condemn intolerance and extremism abroad, so will we stay true to our traditions here at home as a diverse and tolerant nation.”

A Prayer for the new Christian-based law school in Downtown Shreveport

Read the article here.

"Oh, Lord, please protect these lawyers while they are being educated in Your most Holy ways in their private building in downtown Shreveport.

Bless their glassed-in tennis courts and basketball courts; may no one sprain an ankle there and ...be forced to miss City Court where all the sinful pot-smokers are rightfully being convicted for 5-10 years.

Lord, please don't let them trip over any homeless people as they make their way to their Divinely-appointed, sales-tax-free law school.

And after they graduate, Lord, please bless their McMansions and their Range Rovers and their law firms and the escrow accounts which are readily available to mooch from in order to build multi-million dollar homes at Long Lake.

May they be successful in carrying out the Napoleonic Code that was handed down straight from the lips of Jesus Christ.

And when we go hungry due to bankruptcy filings, false accusations, collusion among judges and attorneys who pay for each other's summer vacations, please forgive us for feeling a little sore that all our money was spent with these fine men and women who will protect us from our ignorant, Gentile-selves. Thank you, Lord, for the lawyers and for this blessed law school.

And thank you, Jesus, for what you taught us about lawyers, because sometimes that's the only thing that comforts me at night so I can go to sleep."
